11) The Kleh Lecture Victims’ Right to Truth: The Changing Faces of International Criminal Law featuring Professor Leora Bilsky
(top)
When: Thursday, October 20, 2016 from 12:45 PM to 2:00 PM
Where: Barristers Hall
What: The last two decades have witnessed the emergence of a new human right: a victims’ right to truth. This right has been principally elaborated by regional human rights courts such as the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights, however, lately there have been attempts to import this right into international criminal law (ICL) by victims who demand greater participation in the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague, as a way to fulfill their “right to truth.” Most scholars portray the development of the right to truth as a natural and seamless progression forming part of the movement to end impunity. In this lecture I would like to challenge that complacent stance by uncovering discontinuities and changes in the understanding of the truth that occur when a victim’s right to truth is transplanted into the criminal trial, and by exposing some risks posed by the new right to truth for international criminal law and specifically for the collective memory of mass crimes under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.

Luckily, HLA and the Lown Institute are here to help you down that path. Join us for an empowering open forum on personal experiences with the health care system, aimed at producing better health care policy. On top of this great opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of health care policy, HLA will be serving Subway sandwiches. Come be a part of the solution!
